Encrypt your FTP traffic

Encrypting your FTP (File Transfer Protocol) traffic protects your username, password and the files you transfer from being read by anyone who intercepts the connection. Loopia supports FTPS (FTP over SSL/TLS), which uses your normal FTP credentials but wraps the connection in an encrypted TLS tunnel. We recommend using FTPS whenever you publish a website over FTP.

Enable FTPS in your FTP client

To encrypt your FTP traffic to Loopia, your FTP client (file upload program) must support FTPS – explicit TLS/SSL. In your FTP client, set the protocol or encryption setting to Require explicit FTP over TLS (or the equivalent option named in your client).

As the host or server address, connect directly to the encrypted FTP host shown below:

Use your normal FTP username and password to log in.

If you cannot connect with TLS/SSL

If the connection fails when you enable TLS/SSL, your router or gateway may have a built-in FTP proxy that does not support encrypted FTP. Contact the manufacturer of your router for advice on disabling the FTP proxy, or try connecting from a different network to verify that the issue is local.

Note: Loopia does not currently support SFTP (Secure FTP / SSH FTP). If your FTP client only supports SFTP, use FTPS instead. See Do we support SFTP or FTPS? for more details.
