How to point a domain to an external website with CNAME and A records

This guide explains how to point your Loopia-registered domain to an external website provider such as Google, Homepage24, or DinStudio by adding CNAME and A records (DNS records, or zone entries) in the Loopia DNS editor.

Get the records from your website provider

At your website provider, you first need to configure the account for the domain you have registered with Loopia. Contact the provider for guidance on exactly how to do this and which CNAME and A record values to use.

In this example, we show how to point to Homepage24, but as long as the provider supplies CNAME and A record values the same steps work for any provider.

Open the DNS editor and delete existing records

Log in to your Loopia customer zone and click on the domain name you want to set CNAME and/or A records for. Then click DNS editor to view the current DNS settings.

To point the domain both with and without “www”, start by deleting the existing A records and/or CNAME records found under the “www” and “@” subdomains (e.g. blog.example.com). This does not affect your email as long as you only delete A records and CNAME records. You cannot enter the new values before the existing A records and CNAME records have been removed from both “www” and “@”.

Add the new records

Your domain is now ready for the new DNS records. Click Add a new record under “@” and again under “www”.

Under “@” you cannot add a CNAME — this subdomain only accepts A records. Enter the A record (IP address) supplied by your website provider here.

Under “www”, enter the CNAME you received from your website provider. In this example it is Homepage24’s CNAME.

Done

After you save, the records usually start working within an hour. Note that these settings only apply if your domain uses Loopia name servers (DNS servers). You can check which name servers your domain uses on whois.loopia.com.
