How to change name servers for your domain

Changing the name servers (DNS servers) for a domain name in the Loopia customer zone lets you redelegate (point) the domain to a different DNS provider, or to use Loopia’s own name servers. This guide explains how to check who the registrant is, how to change the name servers, and how to verify the change.

Check that Loopia is the registrant

In order to redelegate (transfer the domain’s DNS to another set of name servers) through the Loopia customer zone, Loopia has to be the registrant (the registered owner record) for the domain. Enter your domain name on whois.loopia.com and search to see where the domain is registered. The results show whether Loopia AB is the registrant.

If Loopia is not the registrant, you will need to transfer the domain to us before you can change its name servers from your account. Read more about that here.

Open the name server settings

If Loopia is the registrant, log in to the Loopia customer zone and click on the domain name you want to change name servers for. If you cannot find the domain in the list, enter it in the “search among your services” field. When the dialog box for the domain opens, click the Name servers button.

Opening the Name servers section in the Loopia customer zone

Enter the new name servers

The dialog box expands and gives you the option to enter up to five name servers. At least two name servers must be specified.

If you want to use Loopia’s name servers, enter ns1.loopia.se and ns2.loopia.se. If you are moving the domain’s DNS to another provider, you will receive the correct name server addresses from them.

Entering new name servers in the Loopia customer zone

For the change to go through, the two name servers you specify must be correctly configured to answer for your domain. If they do not answer correctly, the change will be rejected.

You can also tick the force option to point the domain at the new name servers without verifying that they answer correctly first.

Save and verify the change

Once you have entered the name servers you want to use, click Change name servers. If everything is in order you will see a confirmation message, and the change will propagate over the next 48 hours.

Confirmation that the name servers have been updated

You can verify that the new name servers are in place by searching for the domain on whois.loopia.com, which will show the updated record shortly afterwards.
