If your internet connection has a dynamic IP address (one that changes automatically), LoopiaDNS’s DynDNS support keeps your domain pointing to the right address every time it changes – useful if you run your own server, NAS or VPN from home.
What dynamic IP and DynDNS are
A dynamic IP address can change every time you restart your router, or after a certain amount of time. That makes it tricky to run your own server at home – especially if you want it to be reachable through a domain name at all times.
LoopiaDNS solves this. Our DNS service supports the DynDNS protocol, which means that most applications and tools developed for DynDNS work directly with LoopiaDNS.
How it works
Install a DNS client (an update program) on your computer or server. The client watches your IP address, and as soon as it changes, sends the new address to LoopiaDNS automatically. Our DNS servers update immediately, so your domain always points to the right place – however often the IP address changes.
This is useful if you:
- Use a VPN or remote desktop via your own domain
- Run a web server at home
- Want to remotely access a NAS or other device
Getting started
- Prepare your domain for DynDNS support.
- Choose and install a DNS client on your computer or server.
- Enter the username and password for your Loopia Customer Zone account in the client, along with the domain name you want to update, so it can update LoopiaDNS automatically.
Important: You always log in with the username for your Loopia Customer Zone account, regardless of which domain name you want to update. The domain name is not your username. Each domain name you want to update is sent as usual in the client (often in a field called hostname).
We can’t guarantee that every DynDNS client works with LoopiaDNS. We have tested some of the most common clients, and the versions available at the time worked without issues.
