Upgrading PHP at Loopia keeps your website compatible with the latest security patches and performance improvements on our Unix web hosting platform. This guide explains how to verify that your website’s code is compatible with a newer PHP version and how to switch PHP version in Loopia Customer Zone.
The latest PHP version available at Loopia is PHP 8.5. Last checked: 2026-09-22.
1. Check your website’s code
Before the upgrade, we recommend that you check your website’s code to make sure it is compatible with the later PHP version. Your website will then continue to work as before after the upgrade. Follow the steps for the platform you use.
WordPress
- Upgrade WordPress and installed plugins/themes to the latest version. Read more here on how to do this.
- Upgrade all premium plugins/themes as well as custom-made plugins/themes as recommended by the developer.
- Uninstall or replace all plugins/themes that do not support the PHP version you intend to upgrade to.

Joomla
- Enable error messages on your website.
- Upgrade Joomla and installed plugins/themes to the latest version.
- Upgrade all premium plugins/themes as well as custom-made plugins/themes as recommended by the developer.
- Uninstall or replace all plugins/themes that do not support the PHP version you intend to upgrade to.
OpenCart
- Enable error messages on your website.
- Upgrade OpenCart and installed plugins/themes to the latest version. Read more here on how to do this.
- Upgrade all premium plugins/themes as well as custom-made plugins/themes as recommended by the developer.
- Uninstall or replace all plugins/themes that do not support the PHP version you intend to upgrade to.
Other
- Enable error messages on your website.
- If you have third-party software installed on the site, read the documentation for that software for information on how to upgrade to the latest version.
- If you have proprietary code on the website, see the following links for information on how to upgrade the code to support the PHP version you intend to upgrade to.
2. Upgrade the PHP version in Loopia Customer Zone
- Log in to Loopia Customer Zone.
- Click the domain of the website that you want to upgrade PHP for and select “Website with Loopia” > “Unix”.
- Select your preferred PHP version and click “Save”.
All PHP versions run on servers with Apache 2.4 (HTTP server).
Starting November 1, 2026, we are upgrading all websites on our Unix platform from PHP 8.2 to PHP 8.4.
The reason is that PHP 8.2 reaches End of Life on December 31, 2026 and will no longer receive security updates after that date. To ensure that your website remains secure and runs on a supported PHP version, we are therefore upgrading it to PHP 8.4.
If your website has been upgraded and something is no longer working as expected, it is usually because the website, theme, or one of its plugins needs to be updated to be compatible with the new PHP version. We therefore recommend that you first review and update the components causing the issue.
Please note that, as the website owner, you are responsible for keeping your website updated and compatible with the current PHP version.
