UNIX (FreeBSD) and Windows are the two operating systems Loopia uses on its customer web servers. The operating system on your own computer has no bearing on which platform you should choose for your hosting.
Both UNIX and Windows support HTML and all the basic web features. The main difference lies in which scripting languages and technologies each platform can run.
UNIX and Windows compared
- UNIX
- Supports CGI, Perl, Python and PHP with a range of extensions (for example image processing via GD).
- Windows
- Supports classic ASP as well as every .NET version, so the version you intend to use will work – whether that is .NET 8, .NET 9, .NET 10, .NET Core, MVC, classic ASP, or any other version. Last checked: 2026-09-22.
Which platform to choose
For an ordinary website, we recommend UNIX. Choose Windows only if your site specifically requires ASP or ASP.NET.
